We contend that true science affirms and confirms God’s existence. Some scientists, however, are unwilling to give God any credit, preferring to invent theories that ignore Him—theories which ultimately expose the foolishness of the agnostic and atheistic scientists themselves. We submit a recent example.
The famous British theoretical physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking states in his new book The Grand Design: “Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the Universe going.” (“Light the blue touch paper” is a colloquialism referring to a type of fireworks fuse.) Here is a link to an article about Hawking’s book and statements. We have archived the article here.
Despite his brilliance in higher math and the study of the universe via astronomy, Hawking’s mind is obviously confused when it comes to the existence of God. Anyone with common sense is left scratching their head wondering how a man so allegedly brilliant can make such foolish claims as those in the quote above. Psalm 14:1 states, “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God…” (KJV). In Romans 1:20-22, Paul writes, “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools…”
Dr. Hawking’s pronouncements quoted above appear foolish indeed when one considers just a few obvious and common sense questions: Who invented, designed and implemented those laws of physics (gravity, etc,)? Who made the matter upon which gravity acts? Moreover, does not the law of entropy (second law of thermodynamics), when applied to evolution, indicate that the natural tendency of a non-directed creation is degeneration into greater disorder, rather than evolution into greater order or complexity?
For more details about the law of entropy, see this article or read it in our archives here.
Furthermore, even if we were to grant the existence of matter which somehow always existed (which premise we do not grant because it is utter foolishness), then how could the chaotic state of the universe eons ago “spontaneously” organize itself into the wonderful order and the higher and greater complexity that is observed everywhere we look in the natural world?
We feel compassion for Dr. Hawking and his confused state of mind. We pray that God will lead him (at a minimum) into the truth of His eternal existence and His concomitant right to be worshipped as the Creator. Indeed, may we all be led by the Holy Spirit into greater and correct understanding.
